you may ask: how did this happen (looking back to august 2009)?

well I “had” to sell my beloved Nokia 5140i with the GPS shell/support and all the other fancy stuff like the temperature sensor, torch and water-level.
what did I want next: obviously a mobile phone, but with a keyboard, internet enabled like WLAN and GPS. no microsoft if possible, m$ experience on the pc is enough, I wanted something else.
HTC was already out there but only with Windows as OS. So I went for the N97. [today the Motorola Milestone would be an option, too; Sony now also has something in that category, not sure about the Sony stuff though. I also fancy the N900 but it is even bigger than the N97, and that is already a big brick]
how does it compare to my old mobile phone? :——) excellent, the only thing I am missing from my old phone is the temperature sensor. [the infrared is also missing compared to the 5140i, but I rarely used that, and my phone was not meant to be a tv-b-gone
And it gets more expensive, you have to check for data-plans, such as 3G subscriptions which are still very expensive here in Luxembourg, like (only data!, phone use is billed seperately...) 500MB for 10€ per month...

Is there some way to display the temperature value on the main screen of a N97? I think every hardware has those sensors, but I am not sure if those on the N97 can be addressed to display that value on the mainscreen…
am I satisfied? pretty much! the slider mechanism works well, the keyboard is great, too! fm ( & integrated transmitter) works fine. bluetooth, rsap, wifi, pictures & video are great http://www.flickr.com/photos/42695321@N02/ . 32GB storage + 16GB with a sdhc-card is enough for such a small device… “enough” because transferring so much data to or from the phone is still slow imho.
does internet work: yes, you don’t need an app per homepage. The N97 is powerful enough and has many different browsers to surf the web. The default one is already good, but I also use the Opera mobile browser, digi@web & skyfire if for some reason an internet page decides not to display correctly on/in the first program I used. I don’t use special email applications because the phone browsers can access my email-addresses…
Multitasking works! i.e. you can run skype, qik, ovi maps & browse the web. or combine running any other programs…
If using everything the battery drains relatively fast. In my stress tests using Bluetooth, WLAN and GPS permanently works for one day. Recharging is fast but the small charger gets extremely hot, so pay attention to where you put it while charging the phone.
some great programs:
- for watching video files: smartmovie, unfortunately this program is not freeware; watch the core-player for perhaps a free video-player
- the best twitter client is gravity, unfortunately this program is not freeware;
- googlemaps was and is still free for the mobile phone………………………..
………………. but don’t forget ovi maps, it is also free for the newer Nokia phones and it works offline (maps saved on the internal phone space)!
- augmented reality can be useful, check it out: aRound
- lots of other useful things like:
the nokia sportstracker (would be even more useful if you could buy the bluetooth heart rate chest belt);
midomi/shazam;
skype (I think skype videochat only works while using the fring-client);
Since the v20 firmware the phone works as it was/is advertised, at the beginning that was a bit of a problem for me as between v10 and v20 some months/time had to pass….
other thoughts: why do so many people/companies/developers/engineers/sellers have to copy/clone iphone styles? I also bought my phone because it wasn’t an iphone with its limitations… well the nunlock and photobrowser still look good…but also do not much more…
If you look for a small computer which fits in your pocket, consider the Nokia N97. No need for 300k different apps if the phone can do most of it out of the box…
I think that’s all for now.
